With so many different credit cards on the market, it can be a difficult and overwhelming task just getting all the information you need to make an informed decision. Credit cards are lucrative business to banks and other organisations so they often try to lure you in with deals for new customers.

Some deals offer 0% interest cards for the first six months, while others offer air miles, extended warranties on your purchases and retail vouchers. These offers sometimes act as bait for unwitting consumers, but if you implement them in the right way, then there is no reason you cannot use them to your advantage.

Choosing The Best Credit Card Deal

Choosing The Best Credit Card Deal

Certain deals will be a waste of time for some people, but if you trawl through the offers available, you can often work out which one is best for you and start reaping the rewards. With this in mind, this guide aims to alert you to the deals out there and hopefully help you find one to fit your current situation.

The way that many of these deals work is that, to trigger the offer, you have to spend a certain amount in a specified period of time. As an example, some credit cards will offer enough air miles to pay for a return business-class flight to destinations such as Russia or Turkey, as long as you spend £250 within 90 days.

So, if you spend a lot of money each month on travelling, just open up a credit card account with a provider who offers a similar deal, use it for your normal spending that month and then reward yourself with a free trip. This only works if you pay off the money you spend, as soon as you receive the air miles, so as to not incur any charges.

Of course, if you are the type of person who prefers to keep your feet firmly on the ground, cards that offer air miles are probably not for you. Ask yourself: if I receive this free flight will I actually use it? If the answer is no, then steer well clear and look elsewhere.

For shopaholics, the best credit card deals are probably the ones that offer high street vouchers or money off at top stores. Some credit cards will give you great discounts on your purchases if you use them to buy online; others will offer you vouchers when you sign up. Again, these types of cards don’t suit everyone so think about how you use your card and the type of items you purchase before you choose you card.

If you have lots of gadgets or electronic goods in your home, or are planning on buying a new TV or laptop, then a credit card that offers to extend the warranties on such goods is something to think about. The majority of cards will offer a one-year warranty as standard and some will automatically extend this by a year, if you use them to pay for the goods.

This is a great way of protecting that expensive new flat screen TV or iPad for free and if you are planning a purchase of this kind, then it may be worth your while to open an account just for this one transaction. As is the case with any of these deals, the key is that you pay back the amount owed in full and before you are charged.

So if you are looking to apply for a new credit card, take some time to shop around for the best deals. Before diving headlong into the first shiny offer that’s wafted in front of you, ask yourself whether this particular deal is best for you.

Imagine for a moment that you are about to run a race. You lean in and take your place and as your heart begins to pound at a relatively controlled pace in preparation for the sprint you are about to take you take a look at the others around you. They are all feeling the same thing, the excitement of the event pumping hard in their veins, waiting for the shot to be fired.

Honda performance chips of cars can help win the race

Honda performance chips of cars can help win the race

Now imagine that the gun has gone off and the group of athletes explode out on to the track. As you leap forward and your feet hit the ground you suddenly realize you’re your heart and lungs are still running at a slower rate. It doesn’t matter how fast or hard you push, you still can’t seem to get any more out of your body, and quickly you fall behind in the race, loosing terribly to those who were able to get their all from their bodies.

Now what imagine that instead of that foot race you are in your Honda and you are about to speed down the track with several other sports cars. If this same scenario was affecting your vehicle and your engine was only allowing you to perform at a preset level than you would likely loose this race as well. But what if there was a way you could control the heart and lungs of your Honda in a way that would allow you to go farther and faster than you ever could before? In the real world this is something that is actually possible with Honda performance chips for cars.

A performance chip is a device that is crafted to manipulate the engine control unit (ECU) and will give you the ability to alter standard operations like the fuel injection, automatic transmission, or spark timing. There are many elements that Honda performance chips for cars can control that reportedly can give the vehicle seven miles per gallon more for fuel efficiency, and as high as 60 more horsepower.

Over the past few decades these tuning chips have had a growing following that spans from a wide variety of types of vehicles, both old and new. As technology continues to advance forward it is increasingly important that we no longer have to settle for a set level of performance. Now we have options as to how far we want to push our vehicles, and the advance has the real possibility to help drivers get more for their dollar.

One of the biggest issues facing businesses is ensuring maximum efficiency. If the adage ‘time is money’ is true, then it is doubly so for established companies that already have an extensive infrastructure in place and a coherent business strategy. Even if a business is profitable, there is little doubt it could radically benefit from effective enterprise resource planning (ERP) software.

Tools and strategies to help your business grow

There are many types of ERP or integrated management software that claim to help organisations operate more efficiently; consequently, selecting the one that’s right for your business is a potential minefield. Now though, there is an alternative; an increasing number of companies are turning to SAP Business One (SAP B1), a piece of software that provides a fully customisable, intuitive, cost-effective way to organise all the critical functions of your business, including sales, financials and distribution. Easy to implement, SAP B1 allows your company to grow quickly by optimising its working processes.

A good example of this can be seen in the case of Lotte Chemical (UK) Ltd, a business that recently moved over to SAB B1. There were three key factors behind this upgrade:

Inflexibility of its original ERP system

The existing system also did not match the size of the company

A requirement for integration with SAP Business Suite, which was being used a corporate level within the Lotte Group of companies

After an extensive review of the options available, Lotte Chemical opted to use SAP B1 as it “ticked all the boxes for our requirements”. Just some of the reasons Lotte opted for SAP B1 included:

The software has more inbuilt processes and modules aligned with this specific sector, which meant the company did not have to spend time or money on implementing add-ons.

The software is easily implemented ‘out of the box’, with no need for an extensive and time-consuming set up. This meant it was quick and easy to establish the system across the entire company for all end users.

The software is hugely flexible and customisable, allowing the company to change reports and many other facets of its use to fit its exact requirements. This included functions to cope not just with multiple users but also with numerous currencies and languages.

SAP B1 is easy to use and recognisable to the majority of employees immediately, and has excellent integration with other key systems. The design of the software was also praised for being particularly user-friendly.

Lotte Chemical also stated that not only was the software ideal for the organisation, but that it had clear potential to grow and adapt with the company in the future without incurring additional major cost.

The effect upon the business has been marked since the implementation of SAP B1. The company’s HR/OD/IT manager, Stephen Trillo, revealed that: “Efficiency is difficult to measure, but having a fully integrated system has certainly had a positive impact on increasing our efficiency. Previously people worked late a lot, whereas now they are able to get the job done during regular hours.”

In addition, Mr Trillo pointed out that Lotte Chemical is saving around £200,000 per annum on licence and operations since SAP B1 was first implemented. Furthermore, the system is very stable and month end reporting and documentation, which usually took employees 17 days to prepare, now takes five days.

Lastly, Lotte Chemical has revealed that SAP B1 will have paid for itself within seven months. As Mr Trillo succinctly put it: “If you are looking to improve workflow, output of information and save time and money, SAP Business One…has done exactly that for Lotte Chemical UK Ltd.”

It is a story that has been repeated at many mid-size and large businesses across the globe. Perhaps the most remarkable thing about SAP B1 though is not its extensive list of features, its long list of satisfied clients or even its remarkable adaptability. The program’s real selling point is that all the tools and strategies you need to make your business grow are contained within a single piece of ERP software.

The Tour de France is one of the most popular bicycle events in the world and is staged annually. Now in its 108th year, the course changes with each event, however one constant feature is that the finish line is in the French capital of Paris. Being such a popular race, it is a perfect opportunity for many to use a little extra cash on spread betting.

For the uninitiated, spread betting covers various forms of betting on an event’s outcome. Unlike fixed-odds betting, spread betting has the financial reward based on the bet’s accuracy. For example, a spread will be a range of outcomes and the punt is on whether the outcome will be above or beneath the spread. The spread betting UK scene has been growing rapidly in recent years, primarily due to the potential rewards being far greater than they are from fixed-odds betting.

Tour De France: Capturing The Imagination Of Spread Betters

That said, though, the losses can be slightly higher, too: whereas in fixed-odds gambling you can only lose as much as you put down, spread betting carries the risk of losing slightly more than the original wager. This makes it a riskier form of gambling, but it is precisely this element of danger that many find so appealing.

It was a mathematics teacher from Connecticut named Charles K McNeil who came up with the concept of spread betting when he became a Chicago bookmaker in the 1940s. The concept did not become popular in Britain until the 1980s and it is now particularly popular in football.

In such a sport the bookmaker may suggest that 10 or 11 throw-ins will take place in a match, and so the spread will be 10-11. More money will be won or lost depending on the gap between the spread and final outcome. So, if a gambler believes the number of throw-ins will be higher than the spread, they may buy a point for, say, £10. If there are eight throw-ins, the gambler will lose 11 minus eight, providing a gap of three between outcome and spread, which will be a £30 loss. On the other hand, if there are 15 throw-ins, the gambler will lose 15 minus 11, which would be £40. Thus there is potential for higher reward or loss, and so a gambler would be well advised to study the sport in question before placing a bet.

With regards to the Tour de France, then, spread betting would focus not only on who would cross the finish line first but would offer various other bets too, such as how long the winner would take to complete the race, while the gambler could predict how many minutes or hours either side of the spread he thinks it will actually take. Or perhaps, if there was a strong favourite, the bet could be on whether that favourite will beat the spread.

The Tour de France is a particularly interesting case when it comes to spread betting because of its duration. Unlike most sports that have a relatively short time for completion, the Tour de France takes place over three weeks and 2,000 miles, meaning all sorts of bets can be created. For example, spread betting could cover who will be ahead by a certain day or distance, who will be most consistent, the country most likely to perform well and so on. With up to 22 teams competing, there is even more scope for spread betting.

If you are interested in spread betting on the Tour de France then check out bookmakers for the spread. However, if you are still unsure of the rules then it is well worth having sports spread betting explained to you first.

Marquees are covered by wedding insurance; however marquees are not usually covered as standard and they usually require additional clauses in your policy to protect you financially against loss or damage to the marquee during your wedding.

Marquees are a positive addition to any wedding, and they can also be protected by your wedding insurance. A marquee can give you security knowing that you’ll be safe and dry if the weather turns rainy or windy, however it can also offer a cool alternative in the sun. Whether you use a marquee for your whole ceremony, or just as a part of your big day, you should consider insuring it against loss or damage.

Wedding Insurance and Marquee Cover

Wedding Insurance and Marquee Cover

For wedding insurance, marquee cover usually includes a hired tent, gazebo or summer house (including staging, tables, chairs and equipment hired by you) which is solely for your wedding.

Marquee cover as part of your wedding insurance will protect your marquee against loss or damage which could seriously affect your wedding day. You will also be protected by your wedding insurance in case the supplier of your marquee does not meet their contractual agreement or fails to show up on your big day. Marquee wedding insurance cover also financially protects you if you have to cancel, curtail or rearrange your wedding as a direct result of loss of or damage sustained to the marquee during the wedding period.

There are a few scenarios, however, which may not be covered by marquee insurance. These may include:

Loss or damage which happens as a result of the erection or dismantling of any hired equipment

Audio visual entertainment equipment is not usually covered unless specifically mentioned

Damage to the marquee flooring caused by footwear, such as stilettos or heavy shoes

Any other loss, damage or additional expenses which happen after the wedding event has finished

Theft or attempted theft is not covered, unless it occurs through forcible entry. Theft is also not covered from an unattended venue or vehicle.

If you are unsure of what is covered by your wedding insurance policy, you should check with your provider. If you are considering having a marquee as part of your wedding celebrations, you are also recommended to take out marquee extension or confirm that a marquee is covered as part of your insurance policy.

With wedding insurance and a marquee, you will therefore be able to enjoy your big day safe in the knowledge that you are protected from the weather, and your marquee is protected against insured loss or damage.

If you’re running a business there is no doubt that it’s essential for your company to have some sort of online presence. Your organisation’s website will often be the first encounter potential clients will have with you and your business; it’s your shop window.

The benefits of having a website are numerous. Firstly, the nature of the Internet means you can access a greater client base than ever before. The whole world can find out about what your company offers through a few simple clicks of a computer mouse.

How to Build a Website and why it is Invaluable That you do

Secondly, a website can become your employee; you can collect client’s emails, offer online ordering, and put contact details and testimonial pages on your company’s site. Your website, therefore, effectively becomes a sales assistant, administrator and marketing manager rolled into one; and the more your website does the more users you are likely to attract.

So, the idea is simple: step one, create a website; step two, increase client base; and step three, experience greater business and custom than ever before.

It is no surprise that many people have cottoned on to this strategy and have created a basic website for their company. However, one particular type of website many might not have thought of creating is a social network.

Sure it makes sense, from a business point of view, to be a member the major players in terms of social media (a Facebook or Twitter account can boost the profile your business hugely, especially if these tools are used correctly), but what about creating your own social network website?

After all, social networking is as natural to most people as having that first cup of morning coffee or going to buy a paper. We all network socially (with friends, family or work colleagues) almost without even realising we’re doing it. The power of social networking sites in terms of business should therefore not be underestimated.

A social networking site can act as a community space for your customers. Social networks encourage customer interaction with your business and can be an extremely effective way of spreading the word about your company (and creating a loyal customer base). You can also use a social network site to collect valuable feedback from customers.

By creating a social network website for your business you can build a community of people who are interested in the product or service you provide. It is then possible to market your products directly to the people who are most interested in them.

Creating a website needn’t be difficult even if you are a beginner. The first step is to create and registering a domain name for your site. The domain name is essentially the address of the website, so try to make it as snappy and easy to remember as possible.

If you are looking to build a social networking website then you may wish for this to be ‘bolted on’ to your existing company website. This is a good move form a business point of view, as it’s always useful to make your online presence as streamlined as possible, creating a strong brand identity.

Once you’ve chosen your domain, you’ll need to register it and select a host; but remember what you want your website to do will determine what domain host you choose. Selling products online (a commercial website) will mean that you need to choose a host that specifically provides for this. Make sure you research thoroughly before committing to anything.

Once your social networking site is up and running, it’s important to maintain and update it on a regular basis. Keep users up to date by posting new services and developments within your company, or consider having an additional ‘blog page’ to make this task easier. Of course, one of the advantages of a social network is that much of the content is created by the users themselves.

Building your own website initially sounds like a complex and somewhat daunting task; but there are many products available online that will simplify this task considerably. When used correctly a social network website can be an extremely useful tool for boosting your business.

Science has certainly had a go at explaining everything which is a part of our lives, whether it is how we got here, what is in the food we eat or how our bodies function. But can science explain luck? Can it tell us why some people succeed at playing games like online bingo while other people simply seem to fail at every hurdle? Science seems to tell us that luck isn’t luck at all. In fact, luck is simply chance, a random series of events which we may or may not have control over that our brains may possibly perceive as being lucky or not.

Does Science Explain Luck?

Richard Wiseman, a psychologist at the University of Hertfordshire, recently carried out some research into luck. Two groups of people were asked to look through a newspaper and to say how many photographs it contained. One group of people described themselves as lucky and the other did not. The unlucky people took two minutes, on average, to count the photos, while the lucky people took only seconds. The second page of the newspaper contained a large message which told the readers to stop looking and how many photos were in the paper. The unlucky people simply missed the message, because they were not open to an alternative way.

So, perhaps luck is more in the eye of the beholder. You are lucky because you allow yourself to be so. You describe yourself as lucky and you live your life in a lucky way. Take someone who appears to have everything in life. Have they been lucky? If you delve deeper you may see a series of events which led them to this point. Perhaps they worked harder at school or they were a positive person and this has influenced their perceptions of the world. Perhaps they took a chance and played free bingo and won. As the newspaper experiment shows, feeling lucky can make you lucky.

Ever heard the saying “a one in a million chance”? Well, you might say that you would need to be very lucky to be that one in a million and that it will never be you. It is like winning the lottery or getting your dream job. But is it really the case? Another scientist and mathematician has actually pointed out that a one in a million chance occurs much more often than you might have guessed.

Littlewood’s Law, as explained by J.E. Littlewood, a Cambridge University professor, points out that if the sample size is large enough then anything which is amazing could happen eventually. In the case of us humans, a miraculous event could occur fairly often. He realised that we experience one million small events every 35 days of our lives, perhaps one every second while we are awake. If the definition of something being a miracle is that it occurs at a frequency of one in a million, then conceivably it could happen to us about once a month.

This theory also underpins the Law of Truly Large Numbers. If you toss a coin for long enough you can eventually get 100 heads in a row. It might take you several days or it might happen on the first 100 tosses. But it will eventually happen if you are willing to keep trying. There is no luck involved as it is certain that with perseverance, and all other things being equal, those 100 heads will turn up.

So luck wouldn’t have quite as much of a role in amazing events as we might have thought. It seems that scientists have shown us that luck simply does not exist. You can influence your own luck by being an innately “lucky” person. Or, alternatively, you can keep trying until your luck changes.

If there’s one thing we love more than parties (and we do love parties a lot), it’s a party involving fancy dress: and the fancier the better, naturally (preferably with sparkles attached). Fancy dress is not a new thing; costumes, themes and crazy attire have been popular amongst party-goers since before you were a twinkle in your great-great-great-great grandfather’s eye.

Where Did Fancy Dress Come From?

Fancy dress began to be seen around about the 15th century, when Italian aristocrats would hold masquerade balls for friends and relatives. Such balls involved party-goers wearing elaborate, ornate masks to disguise their identities: the showier and more extravagant, the better. These masks often encouraged revellers to behave more freely, since they couldn’t be identified; this is probably why they proved so popular, in hindsight.

Despite criticism from those who said the balls would lead to a downward spiral into corruption and debauchery, they quickly grew in popularity. Culture vultures will note that they also feature in Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet (you remember, in the scene where the pair meet for the first time).

By the 18th century, the masked balls had spread further across Europe (particularly London), and to America. However, as they grew more widespread, they lost their exclusive, decadent feel. By the Victorian era, they had become somewhat old-hat, and the upper classes were on the lookout for the next big thing to entertain themselves. Enter something more akin to the fancy dress parties we know and love today.

Party-goers began to dress up as public or historical figures such as Prince Albert and Queen Victoria (who apparently loved a good fancy dress party herself). With reading becoming an increasingly fashionable leisure activity, dressing up as one’s favourite fictional character also became de rigeur. However, they were very frugal, these Victorian types. Many would use a simple dress with elaborate accessories, meaning that they could use the dress again for more ‘normal’ social engagements at a later date.

Soon, certain dates and holidays became especially linked to dressing up in costume. Halloween is an obvious example; although a ‘chicken or the egg’ style question hangs over this because the Celts used to do it too. Pagan belief states that the line between this world and the next is at its thinnest on 31st October, meaning that the Celts used to dress up in gruesome costumes to scare evil spirits away.

So, fancy dress scholars are unsure as to whether Halloween costumes stem from the Victorian love of costume parties, or the Celtic ritual. Either way, Halloween has become the ultimate holiday for those who love a bit of dressing up with their celebrating.

Towards the end of the 19th century, fancy dress parties became more accessible to the lower classes, as department stores and local dressmakers began offering costumes to customers. People also began using props such as wigs and make-up to enhance their look (and win the prize for ‘Best Dressed’ of course).

The outbreak of war in the 40s hampered celebrations a little, as rationing meant that material for costumes became too expensive for most. However, those who did continue were forced to become ever more creative, with food and household objects all being incorporated into outfits. After rationing ended in 1954, there was a huge swell in popularity for ever more elaborate get-ups.

Nowadays the costume-making business is a big one, as fancy dress parties are thrown by everyone from the Royals (Prince William had an Out of Africa-themed 21st), to stag and hen dos on a Saturday night in Blackpool.

From privileged beginnings, the costume party has evolved to be one of the most popular forms of celebration and costumes can be found on almost every High Street in Britain. We highly suggest you throw one yourself!
