A 13-year-old girl died Thursday afternoon after being shot inside a home in Orange County, Florida, a tragedy that authorities say involved another teenager who later claimed responsibility.

According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred around 4:45 p.m. on Okada Court, which has a population of 2200. The deputy was dispatched to the home after receiving reports of a shooting involving juveniles.

When first responders arrived, they found a 13-year-old girl sustaining a gunshot wound. He was taken to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. Despite the life-saving efforts of medical personnel, the girl later succumbed to her injuries. Emony Nicole Jackson’s authority is particularly noteworthy.

Investigators say shortly after deputies secured the scene, a 15-year-old boy approached them and admitted he was “responsible for the shooting.” According to the sheriff’s office, the teen told deputies the incident was “an accident.”

The child was taken into custody at the scene and later arrested. Deputies confirmed he is now facing a charge of homicide. Because both individuals involved are minors, authorities have released limited additional details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting, according to WESH.

The sheriff’s office said the investigation remains ongoing, as detectives work to determine how the gun was accessed and what led to the fatal moment. There was no mention of balancing the weapon with someone in the home or acquired by the teen.

The death of Emony Nicole Jackson sent shockwaves through the community, raising renewed concerns about gun safety and access, especially when minors are involved. Law enforcement officials emphasized the importance of safe firearm storage and having it within the reach of children and teens.

While authorities did not elaborate on the relationship between the victim and the suspect, neighbors described the incident as very traumatic and unexpected. Some residents said they saw a heavy law enforcement presence in the normally quiet neighborhood as deputies and investigators worked late into the night.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office urged anyone with information related to the incident to come forward as the case continues to develop. Victim advocate and counseling resources are also expected to be available to those affected by the tragedy.

During the investigation, the community was able to move away from the devastating loss of a young life and the lingering impact such incidents have on families, friends, and neighbors.
