Texas Democrat Jasmine Crockett Predicts She Can Win Over Some Trump Voters in New Senate Bid (Photo by Arturo Holmes/Getty Images)
Rep. Jasmine Crockett made an unexpected prediction Monday night as she formally entered the race for a Texas Senate seat. Speaking on CNN’s “Laura Coates Live,” the Democrat said she believes she can win over voters who have backed President Donald Trump, despite being one of his most vocal opponents in Congress.
Crockett’s announcement ended months of speculation about her political plans. Texas Republicans recently redrew the state’s congressional map, making her district far more competitive and raising questions about whether she would pursue a statewide campaign instead. With her decision now public, Crockett used her interview to explain how she plans to build a coalition in a state that has long favored Republicans.
During the conversation, Crockett said many people misunderstand what motivates modern voters. “A lot of people continue to think that this is about policy, yet they can’t really explain how it is that you have Mamdani-Trump voters or how you have Obama-Trump voters, or how you have AOC-Trump voters,” she said. She argued that these crossover patterns show that the political landscape is more fluid than stereotypes suggest. “The reality is that’s where we are going to walk that fine line.”
Crockett went on to say she expects her campaign to resonate with people who may not agree with her ideologically but believe she is willing to fight for them. “We are going to be able to get people that potentially have voted for Trump, even though I obviously am one of his loudest opponents, because at the end of the day, they vote for who they believe is fighting for them,” she said. “It’s about moving people, and I’ve got a track record of doing that.”
Her comments reflect a strategy centered on persuasion rather than strict partisan appeal. Crockett has built a national profile in part through her clashes with Trump and his allies. She has accused him of using presidential authority to “attack” ordinary Americans through immigration raids and has frequently criticized his economic stewardship and the handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files.
As she steps into a high-stakes statewide race, Crockett is betting that her ability to connect with frustrated voters across the political spectrum will give her an edge. Her prediction about attracting Trump voters underscores how unconventional the contest may become as she works to define a path to victory in one of the country’s most challenging states for Democrats.
