In fact, he is doing it. The 44-year-old Philip Rivers is making an unexpected comeback to football after declaring his retirement after the 2020 NFL season. After working out with the organization on Monday night, the veteran quarterback is reportedly signing with the Indianapolis Colts’ practice squad.

Rivers, who has since embraced life as a grandfather and high school football coach in Alabama, is lacing up his cleats once again. His choice to return to the NFL coincides with the Colts’ 2025 season being severely impacted by quarterback injuries.

Rivers, the fourth overall choice in the 2004 NFL Draft, has a lengthy history with Shane Steichen, the head coach of the Colts. According to ESPN, Rivers is undoubtedly aware of the teaching approach and offensive strategy Steichen brings to Indianapolis since Steichen was both his position coach and offensive coordinator when they were both with the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Colts are in a tough position at quarterback right now since they have an 8-5 record and just four games left in the regular season. Anthony Richardson, the backup quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts, is out for the season because he broke his eye socket in a bizarre accident during warm-ups.

Also, starting quarterback Daniel Jones tore his Achilles tendon during the game on Sunday, which ended his season. Riley Leonard, the Colts’ third-string quarterback, hurt his knee in the defeat to the Jaguars, which makes things much worse. It’s not certain whether he will be able to play in Week 15.

The squad may have found the solution in the former Colts quarterback, who guided the team to an 11-5 record and a playoff spot in 2020. Rivers hasn’t played since he retired after that season, but his leadership and expertise might be very helpful for a squad that is quickly running out of healthy quarterbacks.

Now we need to know whether Rivers will be able to play on Sunday when the Colts go to Seattle to play the Seahawks. If he plays, it might have a big effect on his chances of getting into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Rivers is one of 15 semifinalists for the class of 2026. If he joins the Colts’ active roster, his candidacy would start again.

Rivers has had a great career, winning several awards, including over 63,000 throwing yards and 421 touchdowns. His choice to go back to football, no matter how short or important, adds an exciting new chapter to his illustrious career. Rivers’ comeback has Colts supporters and NFL viewers equally excited to see what happens next in an already uncertain season, whether he plays again or just acts as a seasoned presence.

Philip Rivers Net Worth

Throughout his 17-season tenure in the NFL, Philip Rivers accumulated over $240 million in salary, establishing himself as one of the highest-paid quarterbacks of his era. Following the conclusion of his rookie contract, he inked a six-year extension with the Chargers in 2009 valued at $92 million, thereby solidifying his position as the franchise’s long-term focal point.

In 2015, he obtained another significant extension, a four-year, $84 million contract that encompassed substantial guarantees and maintained his position among the league’s highest earners into his mid-30s. Even during the concluding phase of his career, Rivers maintained a high valuation, securing a one-year, $25 million contract with the Indianapolis Colts for the 2020 season.

Philip Rivers Marriage Life

Philip and Tiffany are the parents of ten children. They welcomed their first child, a daughter named Halle, in July 2002, while both were still students at NC State. In late 2024, Halle gave birth to a child, thereby making Philip a grandfather. At that moment, he was 42 years old. In the preceding year, Philip and Tiffany celebrated the arrival of their tenth child, a son.

Philip Rivers Career

When the draft took place, many teams unexpectedly overlooked him due to the perception that he possessed limited arm strength. He had also devised a distinctive hurling technique characterized by a sidearm motion. This situation was not well received by many teams, and ultimately, he was selected by the New York Giants, with the Chargers prepared to acquire him at a moment’s notice. That unavoidable moment arrived in 2004 when Rivers committed to a six-year contract with the Chargers.
