Tori Spelling is offering a clearer picture of what life looks like after the end of her marriage to Dean McDermott. The former Beverly Hills, 90210 star finalized her divorce earlier this year, and she says the transition into co-parenting has been far more positive than she ever expected.
Speaking with People at the iHeartRadio Jingle Ball on Friday, Spelling reflected on the fears she carried into the divorce process and how those fears never materialized. As a mother of five, she said she’d seen too many families fall apart under the stress of separation.
“I watched families go through horror stories with the parents, and at the end of the day, you created beings because you had so much love between you,” she said. The comment made clear that she entered the process determined to protect her children from the kind of turmoil she had seen others face.
Spelling went on to praise McDermott’s role in maintaining a stable and supportive arrangement. “We love and care about each other so much, and I was shocked just because I always read horror stories and everyone predicted it to be so messy, the divorce, and it was super easy and loving,” she said. Her surprise, she noted, came not from a lack of trust in her former partner but from the common narrative she assumed she would inevitably face.

She explained that their commitment to keeping the family connected has shaped the way they co-parent. “We do family dinners, we do everything together, so it’s really good for the kids,” she said. According to Spelling, maintaining a family rhythm has helped their children feel grounded as both parents move forward separately.
Spelling and McDermott share three sons Liam, 18, Finn, 13, and Beau, eight and two daughters, Stella, 17, and Hattie, 14. After 18 years of marriage, Spelling filed for divorce in April 2024. The decision marked the end of a relationship that had faced public scrutiny for years, yet both she and McDermott appear to be approaching the next phase of their lives with a focus on healing and mutual respect.
McDermott himself has been candid about his role in the challenges the couple faced. In a November 2023 conversation with DailyMail, he reflected on the strain he put on their marriage and acknowledged Spelling’s support throughout. “All Tori’s ever done, to this day, is want me to be happy and healthy and I inflicted a lot of damage and pain on that woman,” he said at the time. He added, “I’m taking accountability for that today. And it’s the biggest amend that I’m ever going to have to make.”
His comments offer context for Spelling’s determination to move forward in a constructive way. While their marriage didn’t survive, both appear focused on creating a better environment for themselves and their children.
Spelling’s remarks at the Jingle Ball paint a picture of a family adjusting to a new structure without abandoning the connection that held them together for nearly two decades. Her emphasis on cooperation, shared meals, and emotional consistency stands in contrast to the narrative that often follows celebrity divorces.
As she continues to navigate life after marriage, Spelling seems intent on highlighting what can go right in a breakup rather than what tends to go wrong. For her, the success of their co-parenting relationship is rooted in the same bond that began their family: love, care, and a shared commitment to raising their children well.
