Ghislaine Maxwell’s Texas prison transfer sparks new clash with Democrats

The Federal Bureau of Prisons is pushing back after a Democratic lawmaker accused President Donald Trump’s administration of giving preferential treatment to Ghislaine Maxwell, the convicted Jeffrey Epstein associate now housed at a federal prison camp in Texas.

Maxwell, who authorities said helped Epstein run a child trafficking operation for years, was moved from a facility in Florida to a federal prison camp in Bryan, Texas. The move drew immediate scrutiny because the Bryan facility is generally used for low-level offenders and offers more amenities than higher-security prisons.

The transfer also raised questions because sex offenders are typically barred from such prison camps. Maxwell’s move came as the Trump administration was seeking her testimony amid public pressure over the release of Epstein-related files.

Rep. Robert Garcia, D-Calif., the ranking member on the House Oversight Committee, criticized the transfer after Democratic lawmakers from the Oversight and Judiciary committees visited Maxwell’s facility.

“Oversight and Judiciary Dems visited Ghislaine Maxwell’s prison today, it is essentially a pristine park with fountains and ample green space,” Garcia wrote on X. “She’s the only convicted sex offender there … this isn’t justice.”

Garcia also demanded answers about why then-Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, now Trump’s acting attorney general and nominee for the permanent role, sent Maxwell to the Bryan facility.

The controversy deepened after separate reporting said staff at the Bryan prison refused to answer basic questions from lawmakers during the tour.

In response, the official X account for the Federal Bureau of Prisons issued a sharply worded statement defending the decision and saying Maxwell’s transfer was handled independently by the agency.

“Inmate Ghislaine Maxwell’s designation and transfer were made independently by BOP and were based on these factors that required additional security measures,” the statement said. “Inmate safety is a key consideration, and we could no longer ensure her safety at her original facility. The current facility provided BOP the opportunity for improved security measures and a leadership team specifically equipped to handle the management of these needs.”

The agency also accused Garcia of mischaracterizing the situation and unfairly attacking prison workers.

“Chairman Garcia’s comments on CNN are not only categorically false but also serve to denigrate the men and women of BOP, who work hard every day to ensure safety and security in often challenging and demanding environments,” the statement concluded.

The dispute adds to months of questions over Maxwell’s conditions in custody. A whistleblower previously alleged that Maxwell has been receiving customized meals and private recreation time at the Bryan facility, claims that intensified criticism from Democrats and others who argue she is receiving treatment unavailable to most federal prisoners.

For Garcia and other critics, the issue is not only where Maxwell is being held, but why an inmate convicted in connection with Epstein’s abuse network appears to have been placed in a facility normally off-limits to sex offenders.
