Farm Bankruptcies Surge as Kentucky Growers Struggle to Make Ends Meet

Kentucky farmers are feeling the strain as rising fuel, fertilizer, and other costs take a toll on both their operations and personal well-being. Nationally, farm bankruptcies hit a six-year high in April, according to Epiq AACER, with small and large operations alike struggling under the weight of climbing expenses.

For fifth-generation cattle farmer David Tucker, owner of 3T Cattle in Fayette County, the numbers reflect the daily reality on his farm. “It can get nerve-wracking some days, going over finances and trying to figure out how we’re going to make everything work from year to year,” Tucker said.

He sees the trend as the result of many pressures converging. “With the rise of input costs—fuel, fertilizer, labor after COVID—it’s not one specific thing, but it feels like death by a thousand cuts,” he added.

The statistics back up Tucker’s experience. Jonathan Shepherd, an agricultural extension specialist, said farm bankruptcies rose 46% nationwide from 2024 to 2025, with 315 filings last year. The Southeast and Midwest were hit hardest, with the Southeast seeing a 69% increase.

While Kentucky recorded no Chapter 12 bankruptcy filings last year—a legal option that allows family farmers to restructure debt while continuing operations—Shepherd warns that tight profit margins in the crop sector still put many farms at financial risk.

“Projected costs of production are higher than what farmers are likely to receive for their crops, so many are going into the hole financially,” he said. The stress goes beyond finances. Tucker stressed the importance of community support, noting, “Farm bureau helps by building a community around everybody, because farmer suicide is at an all-time high as well.”

Shepherd echoed the sentiment, encouraging farmers who are struggling to reach out. “You’re not alone. Financial stress can feel isolating, but there are resources and people who can help,” he said. Every Kentucky county has an extension office offering financial guidance, and local farm bureaus provide community support during difficult seasons.

With hay season underway, drivers are also reminded to use extra caution when passing farm equipment on the roads, as farmers balance heavy workloads with challenging financial pressures.
